Going out for a cuppa and some cake is one of our favourite things to do, enjoy a selection of our favourite places to visit in the North East.
Dreamworld Cakes
This place is easy to miss but is like no other we have visited and needs to be on the list of all sweet treat lovers visiting the area. They offer continental patisserie, sandwiches and toasties and a selection of drinks. The cakes are like a delicate work of art. We ordered a Nutella bar and a flourless pistachio and chocolate bar. No description can do them justice. Each had a light sponge covered with ganache and then smooth chocolate and decoration. We did not want them to end and are already planning our next visit.
Olive & Bean
Situated on Clayton Street, a short walk from Monument, Olive and Bean is an independent cafe offering breakfast, lunch and sweet treats in Newcastle city centre. All their sandwiches can be made gluten free and they also have cake options. On this occasion we stopped for a rest from shopping and decided on their carrot and walnut cake and gluten free cherry and almond blondie. Although they don't take bookings, and demand is high, the atmosphere inside was chilled and service was excellent. We will definitely visit again to try their savoury offerings when looking for somewhere for lunch with gluten free options in the city centre.
Kiln
Situated in Ouseburn, Kiln is a cafe and pottery studio. They offer lunch and evening meals and a popular Middle Eastern Brunch. We visited to sample their tea and cakes after a mammoth walk along the quayside. We ordered gluten free pistachio and raspberry cake and also a carrot cake. The cakes were light but full of flavour and definitely provided the sugar rush needed.
Valeries
Situated in the iconic Spanish City in Whitley Bay, Valeries Tearoom is a popular stop for visitors to the coast. I was pleasantly surprised to find a selection of four gluten free sweet treat options, which is rare. On this occasion I decided to try their orange & berry polenta cake, while the teenager, without allergy restrictions decided on chocolate cake. I would say the cakes are slightly more expensive than others we have visited but are decorative and tasted delicious. A reliable options to remember when we are in need of a warm drink and treat after a brisk walk from Tynemouth.
Sweet Petite
The Sweet Petite is situated at Mackie’s Corner on High Street West in Sunderland. It’s a unique tearoom like not other we have visited in the North East. If decorative cake stands, lace tablecloths and flowers on the table are your thing you are in for a treat here Unfortunately at our time of visiting they did not have any gluten free options and so a hot chocolate was my only choice but Gavin and the teenager decided on an indulgent chocolate waffle and boost bar traybake. It’s a tiny venue but they do also offer afternoon tea and often have seasonal treats.
